We remember Katrina because Katrina is the Future.
At the end of the day (literally. As I write this we’re down to 90 minutes of Katrina Day), I’ve struggled with how to write my account of the events of the two weeks of 20050821 to 20050905.
For me, I went through the event as some kind of silly dick picaro, dodging an angry girlfriend, her annoyed best friend and the bff’s treacherous Quebecois fuck buddy, Luc. Without them, none of this gets going. I went through Katrina as a sex comedy. AND IT STILL SUCKED. If that isn’t white privilege, I don’t know what is.
But shit got fucking real when I got home to Fort Worth. There was a plague of crickets in the streets that summer. It hadn’t rained Junejulynoraugust in North Texas and everything was the brown color of dead corn. In that dun sere, I had to pitch a tent in the backyard for a week while my mom cleaned out enough of the hoard from my room so that I could sleep in my own damn bed.
When I went to FEMA at Will Rogers, I saw a group of men standing together. They were from New Orleans. Geee Ask me How I Know. I asked them how they made it out. Buses. Did yall take water? Did I take water. No I was on Aline St. Oh, that’s a white neighborhood. And the conversation was over. As well it should have been.
There was no way in heaven or hell that I was going to discuss the ridiculousness of my past week. Or the ridiculousness of sleeping in my own backyard in a tent on a crunchy lawn. Neither the time nor the place.
But I think the psychic residue has worn off.
Hurricane Katrina was this weird nexus of multiple time lines which radically altered the psychic makeup of the United States. That hurricane seriously fucked up the Qi of this country. Out of these, I’m going to pick out four and run with them for a while.
In this paper, I shall endeavor to explore: The Irish in the American South, Ecology as a form of Liberation Theology and their Triune relationship with Civil Rights, the Catholic role in creating PSV Slavery in the New World and the Catholic role in helping dismantle Jim Crow in the South, then finally, I shall discuss the Qi of SOLA aka the Geopolitical Realities of New Orleans, LA in an era of climate change and Great Power Politics.
Because at the end of the day, Katrina showed the entire world what rising seas are going to do to all of us. Katrina showed the world that the Highland Ground Villagers don’t give a fuck about you. Katrina showed us all globally, live on CNN, what happens when you’re poor, stuck living in a legacy system that even the SMEs can’t fix, and all hell breaks loose. It isn’t pretty. It doesn’t sound good. It smells worse.
We remember Katrina because Katrina is the Future.
